Taiwan - the planned trip

We planned to take a nice 5-day vacation to help fight jet-lag and take advantage of cheap flights within Asia.  So after a couple days of waking up at 3/4am in Shanghai, we headed to Taiwan.  It was hot, very hot (with a feels-like temperature reaching to 117°), but a chance to see some island life and experience all the famous night markets.  Taipei is a large city full of street eats, pineapple cakes, and Taiwanese tea.

Our favorite part of the trip was heading down the East Coast to check out some of the natural scenery in Taiwan's many national parks.  Taiwan is a very mountainous state.  Visiting the Taroko Gorge provided a beautiful display of all sorts of natural wonders including brilliant blue rivers, marble rocks, waterfalls, beaches, monkeys, lizards, bats and caves. We greatly enjoyed looking one direction and seeing mountains, and looking the other direction to see the ocean.

Hard hats provided for all guests at a checkpoint due to the possibility of falling rock
